A regional workshop on gender-based violence opened in Tunis on Monday.
The workshop is organised by the Cawtar Centre, a women’s NGO, and the Belgian study and counsel cabinet “Transtec” and will run up to April 23.

The event is part of series of regional events, destined to promote equality between men and women in the Euro-Med area.

It also aims at issuing methodological tools and recommendations on how to set up a strategic plan to fight against gender-based violence against women on both shores of the Mediterranean.

The event was officially opened today by the Minister of Women’s Affairs, childhood and the Elderly, Mrs Sarra Kanoun Jarraya, who stressed the importance that Tunisia grants to the issue. She also highlighted the country’s pioneering legislation which guarantees the rights of women and enshrines gender equality.

The Minister reminded Tunisia’s initiative to organize an international conference in Malta in 2007 on the role of the Arab and Euro-Mediterranean woman in promoting partnership and development.
