A WOMAN allegedly gang raped and robbed after being abducted from her home appeared in court for the first time yesterday.

Seven of the 10 men accused of attacking the Nepali are Bangladeshis, who claimed during questioning they were recruited by the three Bahrainis to kidnap her for use as a sex slave.

The Bangladeshis allegedly broke into her home in Muharraq, while she was asleep and bundled her into a car, last September.

Prosecutors claim they then drove her to an apartment in Daih, belonging to one of the defendants, where she was raped and robbed.

The men appeared at the High Criminal Court on charges of kidnapping, rape and theft.

The 28-year-old Nepali was also cross-examined by the defence team behind closed doors.

Lawyer Ebrahim Ramadan, who is representing two of the Bahraini defendants, requested the judges to release his clients from police custody claiming their imprisonment was unlawful because the charges against them were baseless.

However, judges rejected his request and adjourned the case to May 17 for the submission of defence papers. "Her statements contradict what she said to the police and the prosecution I requested judges to release my clients because their charges are baseless," he told the GDN.
